Some people can have difficulties in obtaining a bank account, especially for those with previous or existing debt problems. However the government has stated that banks need to make a "basic bank account" available to everyone, including those with poor credit records.
These basic bank accounts can be used to deposit your Housing Benefit cheque, or arrange to have this paid directly into the account by bacs transfer. They will not normally give you a cheque book,. overdraft or debit card, but you can set up direct debits, standing orders and withdraw cash.
For more information and details of what our local banks can offer please see our Guide to Opening a Basic Bank Accounts
