Information & Features

Layers

The Council’s map-based information is organised into layers. Each layer represents a category of related information, and may contain more than one map. The key shows how the different layers are displayed. Layers can be added and removed from the map, and the advanced layer settings allow individual maps within a layer to be switched on and off.

At present, the service includes the following layers:

Recycling sites

– the location of neighbourhood recycling sites are shown, and the type of materials that are accepted at each site.

Listed Buildings

- Over 3500 listed buildings and other structures in Kennet are mapped, including basic address and grade details, and, where available, photographs.

Building Regulations Submissions

- Submissions received by the Council since 16th December 2003 are mapped. The extent of the land affected by each submission is not shown at present, but a symbol indicates the approximate location. A brief summary of the proposed works are displayed when the symbol is queried.

Conservation Areas & Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

- The extents of the designated Conservation Areas and the North Wessex AONB are shown.

Tree Preservation Orders

– trees protected by preservation orders are shown according to their classification (areas, groups, woodland or individual trees), and a summary of the information from the orders is also available.

Planning Applications

– Applications received by the Council since May 2004 are shown as “points”. The extent of the land affected by the application is not available on this website, but the point is positioned approximately at the centre of the land. Each application includes information relating to the site address, the proposed works, the status and progress of the application. Comprehensive details can be viewed using the links to the Council’s Planning Explorer web pages.

Planning Enforcements

- Sites on which planning enforcement notices have been served since January 2002 are shown with a brief summary of relevant information. Links to further details, and copies of the notices are also provided.

Pollution Monitoring Sites

- The locations of air pollution monitoring sites are shown, with details of the pollutant type being monitored.

Voting & Administration Areas

- The extents of each of the Parishes and District Wards in Kennet are mapped. This information is derived from the Ordnance Survey Boundary-Line data. For the District Wards, links are available to the Ward Members pages.

Broad Rental Market Areas

- Local Housing Allowance is set according to the Broad Market Rental Area in which a property is situated. This layer shows the five Rental Areas covering the District, and gives a table of current Local Housing Allowances for the selected Area.

Background

The layers can be viewed with different backgrounds:

No background mapping – only the layers are displayed.

Ordnance Survey Maps – the layers are shown over a background of OS mapping. The map product varies with the level of zoom of the map window.

Aerial Photography – The layers are superimposed on a background of aerial photographs taken in 2001. The photography is used with the permission of getmapping plc. If you wish to purchase aerial photographs for your own use, visit their site at www1.getmapping.com (External link)

Search

A range of search facilities are available:

Address Search – You can search for addresses by postcode or street. The data is supplied by Ordnance Survey and updated quarterly.

Pre-defined searches – These allow you to find selected features within a fixed radius of either the current map centre or an address. Additional searches will be added in future.

Centre map on town – This is a quick way of moving the map view to a particular area.

Custom search – You can search a selected layer to find features within a chosen radius, or by matching a name or value of features on the layer. The distance-based option gives a choice of where to centre the search.

Go to a grid reference – If you know the OS grid reference of the point you are interested in, you can centre the map on that point, and choose the size of the area displayed around it.
